Tokyo: Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will elect a new leader on October 4 to replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who has announced his resignation, AFP reported.
The leading candidates are Sanae Takaichi, a former economic security minister and a veteran member of the LDP, and Shinjiro Koizumi, the current agriculture minister and son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Neither has yet officially announced their candidacy for the party leadership, but in the last party leadership election in September 2024, Takaichi came in second and Koizumi came in third. Other possible candidates include former Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Cabinet Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi.
Ishiba announced his decision to resign on Sunday to take responsibility for the recent election results, which saw his coalition lose its majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate due to public dissatisfaction over the high cost of living.
