Kim Ju Ae’s birth date and name were first revealed to the outside world by former American basketball star Dennis Rodman, who met Kim Jong Un during a visit to Pyongyang in 2013. When Kim Ju Ae made her first public appearance in 2022, wearing a large white coat, she looked no different from other children of Pyongyang’s powerful people. But for Kang Dong-wan, a North Korea expert at Dong-A University in South Korea, if a younger brother or sisters emerge, Ju Ae could be just a temporary successor. For now, though, Ju Ae’s presence sends a message to North Koreans that the Kim family will continue to lead the country into its fourth generation. South Korean intelligence suggests Kim Jong-un has two children, and there are reports that Kim has a third child, possibly Ju Ae’s brother.

Kim Jong-un chose the ICBM test event as an opportunity to introduce his daughter to the public in November 2022. Since then, Kim has regularly taken her to nuclear sites, introducing her to officials involved in North Korea’s weapons development program. Kim considers the arsenal a key legacy of his family-run regime. When Kim Jong-un was appointed as his father’s successor, he first began to consolidate his power with the military, the foundation of the Kim family’s power.
