Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has promised a better life for the families of North Korean soldiers who died fighting to help Russia in the war against Ukraine, praising the heroism of their children and husbands, who are also North Korean soldiers, according to Reuters.
North Korea’s state media KCNA reported on Saturday, August 30, that Kim Jong Un met with the families of the soldiers on Friday and expressed regret over the failure to save the precious lives of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation’s honor. KCNA quoted Kim as saying, “They did not even write me a short note, but they trusted me to take care of their families, including their beloved children. So the nation will give them a better life in the country that was protected by the sacrifice of heroes.”
Kim Jong-un’s meeting was the latest tribute to North Korean soldiers who died fighting to help Russian forces drive Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region of Russia after Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin formally acknowledged the deployment of North Korean troops to help Russian forces in April. Kim will meet Putin as the two leaders attend a military parade in China next week to mark the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
North Korea and Russia have not publicly disclosed the number of North Korean soldiers sent to fight in Ukraine or the number of soldiers killed or wounded. But South Korean intelligence has said that at least 600 of the more than 15,000 North Korean soldiers sent to help Russia have been killed. Western intelligence officials have also estimated that more than 6,000 North Korean soldiers may have been killed or wounded.
