Tokyo: Japanese voters stripped the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of the absolute majority it had held for more than a decade in Japan’s lower house of parliament with an election on Sunday that extended a period of uncertainty over the leadership of a key US ally.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba now faces a political battle to keep his job and continue on the path set by his predecessor, Fumio Kishida, who sought to strengthen US security ties to counter China, boost Japan’s military and steer the economy toward a full exit from deflation.
