US Navy SEALs shot and killed dozens of North Korean civilians during a gruesome 2019 mission to plant listening devices in the nuclear-armed country, reportedly approved by US President Donald Trump, the leading US news outlet reported.
The classified mission was carried out by US Navy SEAL Team 6 during high-stakes diplomatic talks between Washington and Pyongyang in early 2019, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The elite special forces unit, the same unit that killed former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, was tasked with secretly going to sea in North Korea and planting listening devices to spy on the country’s leadership.
But working at night with communications outages, a series of mistakes led to the civilians – many North Koreans reportedly diving for shellfish – accidentally walking past the US special forces as they washed ashore.
The Times said the SEALs opened fire, killing everyone on the small fishing boat, without specifying the number of dead.
Officials familiar with the mission told the Times that US soldiers “pulled bodies into the water to hide them from North Korean authorities.” One source described how SEAL members “stabbed the sailors in the lungs with knives to make sure their bodies would sink.”
The Times said it gained knowledge of the botched mission through interviews with dozens of people “including civilian government officials, members of the early Trump administration and current and former military personnel with knowledge of the mission.”
The newspaper said all spoke on condition of anonymity because of the mission’s classified status. It added that many said their decision to provide details was out of concern that the failures of US military special operations “are often shrouded in government secrecy.”
President Trump, during his first term in office, gave his final mission the go-ahead, the sources said.
Trump denied any knowledge of the operation when asked by reporters about the report on Friday.
“I can see it, but I don’t know anything about [it],” Trump said.
“This is the first I’m hearing about it,” he said.
U.S. officials said it was unclear whether Pyongyang had ever shared what happened in 2019.
North Korea has not made any public statements about the civilian deaths at the time and has not yet commented on the Times story.
